Marlcliffe Governors

Schools have a Governing Body, made up of a group people who have a passion for education and to see that pupils receive the very best education they can.  A Governing Body is representative of the schools staff, parents, local authority and others who provide the skills the Governing Body needs to carry out its functions.

We also have two staff who are associate governors - what is the role of an associate governor?  Associate members can be appointed to governing board committees for their skills or knowledge. The term ‘associate member’ technically applies to maintained school governing bodies – the role is established in the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012. (Definition provided by NGA May 2026). Associate members can be an asset to a governing board and help it access skills it may otherwise not have benefited from. However, both the governing board and associate members should be clear on the role and remit.

They work as a collective group to meet the three statutory requirements:

• Setting the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction;
• Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
• Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
