Year 2 CH and JJ 2022 - 2023

Welcome to Y2CH and Y2JJ

You can find the KS1 blog here. It features stories and photos from our exciting learning journey together.

Mrs Johnson, Mrs Cashmore and Mrs Harrison would like to welcome all the children back after a well-earned half term break.

This half term our topic is called Real Life Superheroes.  What do you know about superheroes? Do you know any real life superheroes that have helped you?  We will be learning how to find out about real life superheroes from the recent past in our history lessons. Can you think of some ways we might find out about real life people?
In Science, we will continue to observe the weather and seasons by visiting the secret garden. You can help your child by talking about what they notice about the changes in seasons.  This half  term Cool Chloe will help us to learn how to identify, classify and group food.  Book Boy will help us to carry out research about why exercise is important for us and Brilliant Betty will help us to make comparisons.

In DT the children will be learning how to design, sew and evaluate their very own miniature superhero coat!

We have lots of things planned for this half term, so keep your eyes peeled for emails and letters telling you all about the different activities and events.

If you have any questions, please email school at  enquiries@marlcliffe.sheffield.sch.uk

Thank you for your support,

Maths Home Learning 2022-23

Each week we will send home a slip telling you about the main learning activities in Maths during the week and a suggested activity that you could do with your child to support their learning. The activities can also be found on the Y2 section of the Marlcliffe website.

Thank you for your support.

Maths Home Learning 2022-23

Maths Home Learning w.b. 20.2.23

This week, the focus is on measuring lengths and heights. We start off using nonstandard units, such as cubes, and then begin to look at measuring in centimetres using a ruler. Your child could measure smaller objects (shorter than a ruler) around the house, and record these measurements to the nearest whole centimetre as a number, with the abbreviation ‘cm’. It is essential that they understand the importance of starting from zero when measuring, and that not lining their ruler up correctly will lead to incorrect answers.

Maths Home Learning w.b. 27.2.23

This week in Y2, the focus is length and height. The new language introduced in this step is ‘shortest’, ‘longest’ and ‘tallest’, but they also continue to use ‘shorter’, ‘longer’ and ‘taller’ when describing the order of the objects. They will be ordering lengths from longest to shortest, heights from tallest to shortest and vice versa, using the units ‘centimetres’ and ‘metres’ (not mixed when comparing). To support your child, please have a go at measuring objects around the house, and then using the language just mentioned. Please stress accurate measurement with them, starting at the correct place on the ruler or tape measure.

Maths Home Learning w.b. 6.3.23

This week, Y2s are moving onto measuring mass in grams and kilograms. They need experience of picking up and feeling gram weights, using balance scales and circular scales and thinking about the differences between them. They may find circular scales easier to use, especially when the arrow is pointing directly to a number. To support your child, you could involve them in practical activities such as baking or weighing of cooking ingredients. You could also look at any food labels that show amounts in g or kg.

Maths Home Learning w.b. 13.3.23

The Y2 children encountered volume and capacity in Y1 and this week they revisit this learning, before moving on to measuring in millilitres and litres. To support your child, have a go at finding the volume/capacity of different containers around the house, using a measuring jug and reading the scale. Words such as such as ‘full’, ‘half full’, and ‘empty’ are useful to compare amounts, as well as ‘greater’ and ‘less’ and the symbols < and >.
